SF Tour: Around Moscone

Moscone
Moscone
If you haven't seen it by now, well, You Are Here. There is pretty much something going on here all the time, likely you have been here for Macworld. Moscone Center is between 3rd and 4th and the two buildings are across Howard from each other.

The new annex should finally be opening soon. The original email announcing WWDC in San Francisco said Moscone West, to which I commented "Uh, Right." Although I've since been told that WWDC is supposed to be the first event in the new facility. I guess we will all find out how close to done it really is.

It seems some other people got confused too when I was out taking these pictures in April. "Nothing to see here, move along." It was supposed to be "Opening Spring of 2003" but didn't quite make it.
Metreon
Metreon
A shopping mall in the middle of downtown San Francisco. A hipper-than-thou techno shopping mall, but still a shopping mall. The owner, Sony, doesn't have a clue about how to run a shopping mall and it is losing money bigtime. It's not all that big as malls go, but has movies and an IMAX theater.
By the way, that 14 Mission bus goes out to the land of taquerias, little shops and other wonders of the Mission District. The outbound stop is diagonal from Metreon, directly across from Mels. The Mission, neighborhood or bus line, is not exactly the most safe place in the city and if you are out late you are apt to see some less-than-savory activities. The 14 bus is one of the few with 24 hour service.

I think this is supposed to be some kind of web address, but I'll be damned if I can read it. I guess it's because I'm just not one of the k001 14-year-old junior-high d00dz this sort of thing appeals to. This should give you some idea of what to expect inside.

Check out the 4th floor. The Where the Wild Things Are theme gift shop and cafeteria counter is kid stuff, but the view off the balcony is worth it. The red-brown building is the Museum of Modern Art. The upper plaza is on top of Moscone North.

Behind Moscone and between Metreon and the Museum of Modern Art is a park. It's a nice place to walk around, with fountains and grass and all those nice park-like features. The week of WWDC there is an International Music Festival in the park. www.ybgf.org

The multi-level fountain is fun to wander around and watch.

Near 4th and Howard. Not a Mac store, but if you are looking for generic parts like cables, this is a good place to start.
